North Wales Cambrian Rally - Saturday 17th October 2009
The Cambrian is a six-stage rally through the challenging famous welsh forests of Clocaenog and Penmachno. The forests of North Wales are synonymous with rallying especially the Lombard RAC (now the WRC) back in the late eighties, with legendary drivers such as Stig Blomqvist, Markku Alen, Per Eklund and Juka Kankkunen.
Mikko Hirvonen (born July 31, 1980) is a Finnish rally driver currently driving for the BP Ford World Rally Team in the World Rally Championship. He placed third in the drivers' championship and helped Ford to the manufacturers' title in both 2006 and 2007. In the 2008 season, he finished runner-up to Sebastien Loeb. His co-driver has been Jarmo Lehtinen since the 2003 season.
Now in its 54th year (its been running since 1955!) the Cambrian is one of the qualifying rounds of the BTRDA (British Trail Drivers Association). The Cambrian is recognised as one of the best rallies in the UK. This was confirmed in 2008 when it was crowned 'Best Event' by both the BTRDA and ANWCC.
Today the Cambrian Rally is organised by the highly experienced members of the North Wales Car Club (NWCC) and has done since it was formed in 1955.
The event offers a real challenge for competitors, driving through some of the best forest stages, in some of the finest scenery in the UK.
For spectators, it offers a packed day and a chance to see some classic Mk2 escorts and WRC cars getting very sideways.
